Monday Republican Senator George Allen and democratic challenger Jim Webb squared off in their final televised debate before the election.

The two candidates who said they were going to hit the issues hard mostly hit each other hard.

“What we've seen here tonight is issues really do matter,” said Republican senate candidate George Allen.

Issues may matter to voters but for the candidates Monday night was more about bickering with each other.

At one point moderator and CBS News anchor Russ Mitchell had to tell the candidates to move on. The fight centered mostly around taxes.

“My opponent has an opposite view. He doesn't stand with John Warner and me in keeping taxes low’” said Warner.

Allen said the Webb tax plan will take $2,000 every year from the average Virginian family. Webb said it’s simply not true.

“The only person up here who has raised taxes is George Allen,” said Webb.

When they did focus on the issues, the candidates differed on the war in Iraq.

“We need to have a formula that will end this war and bring stability to the region’” said Webb

“Withdrawing and leaving the country is clearly not going to make Iraq safer and not America safer,” said Allen.

When asked about an amendment to define marriage and ban civil unions Webb said he would vote against it and Allen said he would support it.

Both candidates also answered to recent allegations. Allen for using a racial slur against a Webb intern

“It was a mistake and careless words and I have apologized for it,” said Allen.

Webb battled claims he was once hostile to women in some military roles. “Look at my record when I was secretary of the Navy I opened up more roles to women than any secretary,” he explained.

With recent polls predicting the race neck in neck, it will be the voters perception of this debate that may decide this race in November.
