Virginia Voters Approve Gay Marriage Ban

A controversial state constitutional amendment, limiting marriage to one man and one woman has passed.
57% voted for the measure, and 43% opposed it.
The amendment ensures that same-sex couples cannot marry in
Virginia.
It also blocks lawmakers in the future from creating a status that mimics marriage for same-sex couples.
Virginia law already restricts marriage to heterosexual couples.
But supporters of the amendment say an amendment was needed to prevent state officials from being forced to recognize gay marriage performed elsewhere.
