Monticello High School students, counselors and teachers played a round-robin soccer tournament Saturday to raise money for their sister school in El Salvador.

Teachers at Monticello tell us they found a school to adopt in a poor region of the Central American country. And for the last four years, they have been working with the school, sending school supplies and building classrooms.

The money raised from Saturday's soccer tournament helps the sister school and teaches the students here as well.

"We think it's really important for kids at Monticello to have a global perspective and understand a little bit about what people in the rest of the world are going through. This [event] is a way for them to feel like they can make a difference and not just learn about poverty in other countries. They get to actually do something and have fun," said Monticello High School teacher, Rusty Carlock.

They are hoping to raise enough money to bring the school's soccer team from El Salvador to central Virginia to play in Monticello's tournament.
