The holiday season is a chance for folks to enjoy spending time with family and loved ones.
But with a war going on overseas, many American servicemen and women, won’t be coming home for Christmas.
Mary Ellen Wooten knows what it's like for soldiers serving in the war in Iraq.
Her brother has been deployed three times since the war began.
Wooten started ‘From Us to You’, a non-profit organization based here in Charlottesville, that specializes in sending custom care packages to those serving overseas.
"We named it that, because its from us over here in the us to them over there. We network all of the country and literally all over the world for donations and supporters and help, and the soldiers will get to see everyone who has contributed to this effort to share,” said Wooten.
With the holiday season in full swing, Wooten is steadily working to stock her basement with items to send to soldiers.
But she is asking for help from the community. To be able to meet her goal, she asking for anyone who can help out to donate at least $5.
"You know that’s your double cheese burger, your star bucks coffee, your 6 pack of beer, whatever it is, its 5 dollars, we are asking folks to sacrifice their double cheeseburger to help a solider call home for Christmas,” said Wooten.
She has been running this operation for four years now, with the help of kind volunteers in our area.
A local boy scout troop and volunteers at the University of Virginia are a few of the people who have dedicated their time and money to making sure those serving our country get gifts this holiday too.
Wooten also said, "We just do whatever we can, because we're about serving them (soldiers) because they serve us.”
‘From Us to You’ accepts donations year round, but if you'd like to make a donation for the Christmas packages, please do it before December 10th. To find out how to donate, click on the Newslinks tab on our homepage.
