Walmart has won the backing of the Orange County Planning Commission for a supercenter near the Wilderness Battlefield in the northeastern part of the county.
The 5-4 vote given at Thursday night's meeting sends the proposal to the Board of Supervisors. That board is believed to be leaning toward approval of the 138,000 square foot store within a cannon shot of the Civil War battlefield.
Supervisors will conduct a public hearing before taking a vote on the proposal that has been criticized by some of the nation's top historians, as well as actor Robert Duvall. The Orange County Chamber of Commerce, meanwhile, is backing the project, pointing to the jobs and tax revenue a Walmart would bring to the county.

Will Walmart ever stop stepping on toes? It seems as though their end goal is to obliterate all community culture in hopes of creating a Walmart nation. Corporate Accountability International is running a campaign called "Corporate Hall of Shame" where people can vote and indict corporations involved in dirty business. Reading the history, this campaign has made a significant impact on indicted corporations in the past. Let's nominate Walmart! http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/2215/t/8981/signUp.jsp?key=4278

Kudos to the Planning Commission for listening to local residents and not elitists collecting six figure salaries from scam preservation groups in DC. This is great day for Orange County.
