Many remembered the homeless men and women who have died on the streets with a vigil on the downtown mall Thursday.
It's estimated about 150 to 350 homeless people live on the streets of Charlottesville and some have reportedly died on the streets.
Thursday, on Homeless Person's Memorial Day, local groups tried to raise awareness of the problem.
“We're hoping for people to have a time to reflect back on some of the people they have known that have died and some of the people they will be able to help this holiday season, to prevent further deaths and also to raise awareness of people who may be at risk of being homeless,” said COMPASS Coordinator Eric Speer.
The memorial service included one speaker who had been homeless. The service ends Thursday night with a prayer service.
