School leaders are resting easy after putting themselves and the community on alert Friday to protect the students of William Monroe High School.

School officials and students were on alert after a rumor started Thursday and spread throughout the community of a former student wanting to bring a gun into the school.

"Other rumors have gotten out that guns were in school, the high school was locked down, but none of that. Even parents should pick up the children; none of the was the case," said Greene County School Superintendent Ray Dingledine.

Though, there was a case for the Greene County Sheriff's Office to investigate which started on Thursday.

"A student went to the school resource office to say a student not in the school was threatening to bring a gun in the school," added Dingledine.

The sheriff's department followed up on it. They were not able to find a gun, or the person who was believed to be bringing a gun.

The case was classified as a rumor.

"You know we are always going to take those things seriously whether they are true, or not," added Dingledine.

While almost every student heard the rumor, some parents did not, and it showed.

"It's sort of scary. I didn't know anything about it, or hear anything about it," said Parent Gayle Fontaine.

With Greene County Schools taking the rumor, and others like it is seriously, Phyliss Woodfolk was pleased.

"That gives me some relief to know that the schools are on the lookout, and that they are confiscating anything that comes in that might be dangerous," said Parent Phyliss Woodfolk.

Officials say, as far as they know, no gun was ever brought onto the grounds of, or inside William Monroe High School.

There was never a lock down, or any situation which left students outside their classrooms.

The Greene County Sheriff's Office is still searching for the person who started the rumor and threat, so they can press charges.
