Freshman Senator Barack Obama announced on Tuesday that he is forming a presidential exploratory committee.
The announcement was posted on the Illinois Senator's website. More details will be released on February 10, 2007.
The University of Virginia Center for Politics said the low-key decision could be all about timing.
"He's become very popular within the democratic party, and also within the country as a whole. That is huge for a first-term senator from Illinois since it is not necessarily a stepping stone for a national stage," said Matt Smythe of the University of Virginia.
There are four other democrats who also filed paperwork to enter the race for president.
