The bill that would ban colleges or universities from giving in-state tuition to illegal immigrants passed in the House Education Committee today.
Some schools, like Virginia Tech, already limit in-state tuition to legal residents. Immigrant advocates the bill would harm those that are going through the lengthy process of becoming a citizen and unfairly targets a section of society that pays the same taxes that legal residents do.
Advocates support a measure that has passed in the Senate that would grant in-state tuition to illegal immigrants who graduate from high school and promise to seek legal status and have at least one parent paying state taxes.
