British Police Make Terror Arrests

January 31, 2007

British police smashed into a Birmingham House in a predominantly Pakistani neighborhood arresting one of nine men now in custody suspected of plotting a terrorist act.

British officials say the group was planning a kidnapping, the first of
its kind to be uncovered in Britain.

"We are literally at the foothills of a major investigation, proceeding
slowly and carefully" said David Shaw, British Police.

British police have not confirmed reports from Sky news that the target
of the alleged plot was a British Muslim soldier and that the plan
involved a beheading to be broadcast on the internet.

The Birmingham area with its large Muslim population has
been under scrutiny before. Last summer several suspects from these
neighborhoods were arrested and accused in a plot to blow up
trans-Atlantic flights.

Among the locations raided in Wednesday's sweep were this grocery store, as well as an internet cafe and an Islamic book store.

"A lot of people are very perturbed" said Khalid Mahmood, Parliament member.

Reports say the intended victim of the alleged plot is in protective
custody.

A police spokesman says that the investigation had been going on for months.
