UPDATE: Train Death Ruled a Suicide

September 8, 2009

Charlottesville Police have ruled the death of a man hit by a train early Tuesday morning a suicide. Police say the victim laid down on the tracks in front of the train near Shamrock Road and Grove Street.

Officials say the victim was staying with his grandmother, who lives near the scene.

University and Charlottesville Police, as well as forensics units, responded to calls of a body on the train tracks around 7:15 am Tuesday morning.

Charlottesville Police say the man died after the train hit him. Officials say an Amtrak train operator called in Tuesday morning and reported a body laying on the tracks.

"Anytime that you have a body you're always looking for criminal intent, and if its not a criminal case, then being able to move forward beyond that," said Lt. Ronnie Roberts with the Charlottesville Police.

The Amtrak train engineer will be in town Wednesday to answer questions from police about what happened.
