A wintry mix of ice, sleet and rain is pounding our area leaving roads a bit slick.

"It's horrible, it is. It is just horrible," said Morgane Clark.

After much anticipation, a wintry mix of ice, sleet and rain hit our area during the early evening hours making for a tough ride. A multi-car pileup along Interstate 64 on Afton Mountain closed the road for nearly three hours. Traffic was diverted off of the Interstate from exit 96 in Waynesboro to exit 107 in Crozet. Two people were injured and back ups reached several miles long.

"It's just really slick. It is like ice. Even going 10 miles per hour you are still slipping and sliding around," Clark said.

"Getting in town was a little rough. Getting around town was pretty good. The City has it controlled pretty good," said Dennis Lilly.

Lilly is loading up salt into his salt spreader to service his nearly 20 customers in and around the Charlottesville area. He says he fell behind the storm a little bit but plans to make that up through the night.

"We got a little behind but most times we try and get it early. If you get a little something down it sort of gets things stirred up where it will stay soft and we can deal with it then," Lilly said.

And while Lilly says it is going to be a long night, he says it will be well worth it.

"How do these long nights treat you? Not good. But we get paid, that is the main thing," he said.

Right now, VDOT reports that they are focusing on the primary roads and will get to the secondary roads after the primaries are cleared. They say they also expect conditions to worsen so if you don't need to be out on the area roadways, stay away.
