The Democrat backed bill to raise Virginia's minimum wage was killed after it was sent to the Appropriations Committee yesterday.

The move automatically eliminates the bill since the deadline for committee action on legislation was also yesterday. The bill, sponsored by Senator Charles Colgan of Manassas, would have raised Virginia's minimum wage from $5.15 an hour to $6.50 an hour.

House Majority Leader Morgan Griffith of Salem said it had to go the Appropriations Committee because it would have cost the state about five million dollars.

Reston Delegate Kenneth Plum disagreed saying that the state could have easily accommodated any additional cost by using an unappropriated contingency fund.
