Red Light Camera Bill One Step Away

February 20, 2007

The Senate voted 30-10 today to pass legislation that would allow all local governments to install cameras at dangerous intersections. The bill, passed by the House of Delegates two weeks ago, only needs Governor Kaine's signature to become law.

According to a Kaine spokesman the governor wants to review the bill but is inclined to make it a law.

Pilot programs that allowed photos to be taken at intersections in Northern Virginia and Virginia Beach expired July 1, 2005. There had been several measures to reinstate similar programs but all were unsuccessful.

The technology will allow cameras to take pictures at certain intersections of the license plates of drivers who run red lights. The owner will then get a ticket in the mail.
