Downed Power Lines Cause Brush Fires

February 22, 2007

More than 5,400 Dominion Power customers in our area are without power after high winds knocked down power lines. That's down from the more than 7,500 earlier. The downed power lines were also the cause for several brush fires.

Three fire departments and the Virginia Department of Forestry battled a fire in a wooded area in Batesville near Still House Creek and Plank Roads.

According to the Forestry Department the two acre blaze happened after high winds knocked over a power line which sparked the brush. Officials say the fire could have been much worse if a contractor working near the fire didn't call 911 after noticing it.

There have been more than a dozen brush fires reporter in Albemarle County.
