Farmville Fire Kills Two People

An apartment fire in Farmville claimed the lives of two people. Longwood University senior Ed Cunningham and his friend Byron Jamerson of Appomattox died in the fire that injured four others.

The four survivors include two current and two former LU students.

The cause is still under investigation. The apartment did not belong to the university.

Carrie Taylor is a friend of the victims. She said someone walking in the neighborhood saw smoke, and fire coming from the home near Longwood University. That was student Timothy Cocrane.

"He had to break into the house. He got one of the guys out and the guy's girlfriend had to jump from the second story," said the Victims' Friend Carrie Taylor.

When firefighters arrived around 6 A.M. Sunday they found heavy flames coming from the second floor of the building.

"What we found during the search for victims were two fatalities. There were also four victims that were transported to local hospitals," said Chief of the Farmville Fire Department Timothy McKay.

Longwood University is providing a counseling center and campus organizations are rallying together during this time of grief.

"All the fraternities and sororities came together showing that they cared," said Taylor.
