A documentary called My Nappy Roots takes a closer look at the changes of black hair. The film starts in Africa and follows the evolution of the history and culture of hair.
The film's maker said the idea came from an assignment her daughter worked on in college.
“Reggie originally started mentoring her daughter on this little five minute film and then she brought me into it to help mentor in the editing department,” said Jay Bluemke, Co-Producer of the film. “At that time Reggie realized that this would be so much larger and she said she didn't think I would want to be involved at first and I saw that the possibilities for this story were huge.”
The film included several celebrities including Patti LaBelle and Vivica A. Fox.
