The state Senate's top member John Chichester announced Monday that he would not seek re-election to the seat he has held for nearly 30 years.
The 69-year-old is the leader of what has been the dominant wing of Republican moderates in the Senate and the chairman of the budget writing Finance Committee.
Chichester is leaving his seat during a pivotal election year as Democrats aim at reclaiming a Senate majority for the first time in 3 years.
