Supporting Cancer Research With State Refunds

March 19, 2007

For the first time Virginians can support cancer research through their 2006 state income tax forms.

Taxpayers can donate part of their refund, or if they owe can include an additional amount to help finance research at VCU's Massey Cancer Center and UVa's Cancer Center.

Both centers are among 61 nationwide that have received special designation from the federal National Cancer Institute because of the quality of their research programs. This is the first year that the two centers are eligible for the directed tax donations, which will be shared equally by both.

The Virginia Department of Taxation says the cancer centers will remain on the voluntary contribution list for three years and will have to raise at least $10,000 from tax returns in each of those three years or the General Assembly could remove them from the list.
