To kick off the week Monday afternoon VDOT workers laid a wreath in honor of everyone who has lost their life in a work zone.
Allan Sumpter, who came up with the idea, said everyone can take a lesson in safety.
“Typically four out of the five fatalities that occur in work zones are motorists and so it's important that we get the word out that motorists to try to use caution, drive slowly through work zones, be alert to the signs and the lane changes that occur and just be aware that it's something different than what they normally expect,” said Sumpter.
Work zone awareness week began in Bristol, Virginia before going statewide and now national.
