The Albemarle County Fire Department received a $310,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
The grant money will be used to outfit all firefighters with safe and compliant turnout gear. Fire officials say this will go a long way toward making sure that everyone in their department has safe working equipment.
"We are at the point now where certain firefighters have to borrow gear from one another so that we can make that work. This grant really helps us to leap frog forward and get everybody up to speed," said Assistant Fire Chief Bob Brown.
The grant will be matched by $77,000 of local funds and will ensure that every firefighter has the proper protection.
