Three People Plunge Four Floors In UVa Elevator

May 1, 2007

Three people attending a concert at UVa plunged four floors in an elevator Saturday night after attending a concert at the school. UVa officials say that the UVa music department's promotions director and two friends were in the Old Cabell Hall elevator when it rapidly dropped.

The car dropped, stopped abruptly, dropped again, then stopped once more before falling to the bottom of the shaft against the emergency buffer. The three inside the elevator were able to pry the door open with the assistance of several people from the outside. Hydraulic fluid spilled out all around the elevator.

"Thankfully, no one was hurt. We were very lucky," department
chairman Richard Will said Monday.

Will says the elevator was repaired Monday but will be closed until additional tests could be done. UVa's elevators are inspected twice a year. The last time the Old Cabell elevator was inspected was March 23rd.
