V-DOT has closed the Advance Mills Bridge indefinitely after a routine inspection proved the structure to be unsafe. Now many of the 1,000 people who once crossed it everyday want answers.

For many, the bridge on Rt. 743 is their primary path to Rt. 29. Since its closure, it has left them with a major detour.

V-DOT said the bridge has suffered normal wear and tear, and it’s simply old. They won't have a definite plan in place until an analysis is finished, but their main priority is safety.

The bridge has been at Advance Mills since 1948, but its original construction date is unknown.

Tuesday night's meeting will go over how V-DOT plans on fixing it while keeping its historical significance.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Broadus Wood Elementary School in Earlysville.
