Truck Overturns On Rockfish Gap Turnpike

May 22, 2007

For the second time this month, a truck overturned on Rockfish Gap Turnpike. Fire officials say the driver of a street sweeper was coming off of Afton Mountain and lost control making the turn onto Route 151.

The truck went through the guard rail and into the creek. A Hazmat team was called in as a precautionary measure.

"We've got boons in the creek in case when they pull the truck back up, the fuel tank rips open or the hydraulic line comes loose or something," said Captain Preston Gentry of the Crozet Fire Department.

The intersection is no stranger to accidents. Two weeks ago, a milk truck overturned and spilled thousands of gallons of milk into the creek.
