A man was in custody Friday evening, after police said he tried to rob a downtown bank Friday morning.

Police say around 9 a.m., the man in custody walked into The Union Bank & Trust and tried to get away with cash, but police got there before he could get away.

The man they arrested was 38-year-old Jeffrey Adams of Fredericksburg.

According to authorities, there were several employees and one customer in the bank at the time of the robbery.

Police say when they got to the scene, Adams was attempting to leave with money from the bank. He was taken into custody without incident. Neither Adams nor any of the people inside the bank were hurt.

On Friday afternoon, police wouldn't say if the suspect had a weapon, or just exactly what went on inside the building.

But the call to police came from a person who just happened to be passing by the bank and saw someone doing something suspicious.

"I saw this gentleman enter the bank and reach behind him and lock the door," said Cory Jordan. "I thought that was a little strange, so I stood there for a minute and watched and saw somebody in the bank put their hands in the air, and so then I called 911."

Following the call to 911, police say they were on the scene within minutes to make the arrest before the suspect could get away.

The investigation is still ongoing, and police believe another individual may somehow be involved. They said they could make another arrest very soon.

The bank's vice president says The Union Bank & Trust will be back open for normal business hours on Monday morning.
