Wednesday the Charlottesville school board will meet behind closed doors to select its newest member.

They are replacing Louis Bograd, who is resigning to move out of state with his family.

The board says this is a personnel matter, and that's why they will interview candidates in a closed session.

There are four applicants. They are Muriel Wiggins, Grant Brownrigg, Charles Kollmansperger, and Susan Lewis.

Robert O'Neil, Executive Director at the Thomas Jefferson Center or the Protection of Free Expression says the closed meeting has raised some issues.

He said, "The concern seems to be that the selection of a new school board member replacing one that is leaving the community between the normal election cycles out to be done in public."

But Vice Chair Peggy Van Yahres says the school board is holding a reasonable, lawful process to fill a very short-term position. She adds whoever is chosen will not be able to vote on the budget.
