Friends of a Greene County teenager killed by a game warden reacted on Wednesday to the news that the game warden was charged with manslaughter.

“I feel relived because I don't think he deserved to get shot,” said Allen Cochran’s friend David Farmer.

Friends of Allen Cochran agree with a grand jury's decision to charge 25-year-old Robert Orrin Ham III with manslaughter. The game warden shot and killed the 16-year-old back in January during an altercation with deputies.

Court documents charge Ham of intentionally killing Cochran while in a sudden heat of passion upon reasonable provocation or in mutual combat. Friends said Ham should be held accountable.

“What's the charge for murder,” asked Farmer. Upon hearing a manslaughter conviction could come with a maximum 10-year sentence, he said Ham should be sentenced to 10 years.

Cochran’s friends are not the only ones who want to see Ham and Greene County pay. An attorney for Cochran’s family says they will be filing a civil suit for damages regardless of the outcome of the criminal trial. Because of those pending proceedings Cochran’s mother would not comment, but in an interview with the Newsplex in January she made her intentions clear.

“They killed my child and they can't bring my child back. Its’ not right what they did and it will come down to it. I will get me a lawyer and an investigator and Greene County is not going to be worth nothing,” said Danielle Ramirez, Allen’s mother.

The game warden is still working for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. In a written statement they said there administrative review found Ham reacted appropriately. Ultimately, it will be up to a jury to decide.

“When I find that he is guilty that will be mine and Allen’s justice,” his mother predicted back in January.
