Van Hits And Critically Hurts Pedestrian

A man was in critical condition at the UVA Medical Center Thursday afternoon. Police say he was hit by a drunk driver as he walked along an Albemarle County road.

The victim is Xianfeng Chen, 42, an Assistant Professor of Microbiology at the University of Virginia.

The accident happened Wednesday evening just after 7pm along the 100 block of Whitewood Road.

Thursday morning police also released the name of the driver: James Newman of Verona, Virginia.

Newman, who police are charging with DUI, was driving a green Dodge Caravan.

According to police Newman was headed west on Whitewood Road when he went off the road, onto the sidewalk, and hit Chen.

As of Thursday afternoon the DUI is the only charge Newman was facing.

The accident is under investigation by an accident reconstruction team. Investigators were also taking a closer look at the van involved in the crash.

Newman was not being held by police.
