Mary Washington Purchases New Alert System

June 29, 2007

Mary Washington University has purchased a new text messaging system to alert students, faculty, and staff in case of a campus emergency.

The system was purchased from Arlington based Roam Secure incorporated and is expected to be in operation by the start of school in August.

University spokesperson Teresa Mannix said that the school had been looking at systems for a couple of years but the timetable moved up after the Virginia Tech tragedy.

She says that new system will cost $40,000 plus annual renewal fees. It will be used on campus in Fredricksburg, and the graduate campus in Stafford. Mannix says the alert system is designed to work with cell phone, pagers, e-mail, Blackberry devices, and faxes.
