Eleven Injured In Fireworks Malfunction

July 7, 2007

Investigators are trying to determine the origin of fireworks used by a Pennsylvania company that malfunctioned at six sites in northern Virginia on the Fourth of July.

Eleven people were injured when misdirected fireworks exploded into a crowd during a show in Vienna. Another a shell narrowly missed two workers in Fairfax City. There were no injuries at the four other shows.

Schaefer Pyrotechnics was running all six shows where the fireworks malfunctioned. The company was using identical boxes of commercial fireworks made in China.

Fire officials say the Schaefer company does not appear to be at fault. The fireworks setup had been inspected twice, and the company had put on fireworks shows in Vienna for the past ten years.
