Virginia Tech officials say that more than 4,000 students and staff have signed up for university's new emergency alert system.
Subscribers can choose to be alerted to campus emergencies by phone, email, or instant messaging. The sign up period began last week.
The school says that they began looking at the system before the April 16th shootings that claimed 33 lives. Tech spokesman Larry Hincker says that the school looked into the system after an escaped prisoner interrupted the start of the fall 2006 term.
