The race for the 5th congressional district seat continues to heat up. Incumbent Democrat Tom Perriello leads the pack of candidates in fund raising with a reported $1.4 million dollars in the bank. This announcement comes just days after Perriello posted a statement on his website citing the first quarter of 2010 as his best fund raising months to date. He says since January of this year he has raised more than $600,000 nearly all from small donations of $200 or less from individuals with none of the money coming from federal lobbyists. But, many Perriello supporters admit it's still early in the race and they expect his Republican challenger to pick up steam after the Republican primary on June 8, 2010.

Perriello backers packed into City Space in downtown Charlottesville Sunday night to offer their support for his reelection campaign. Some supporters point to his controversial vote for the health care bill as part of the reason he is ahead when it comes to fund raising .

"With the combination of his vote for the healthcare bill and the nutso responses like cutting the gas line to his brother's house and Sarah Palin targeting this race with a bulls-eye on it it was easy to raise money after that" said Perriello supporter Lloyd Snook.

Perriello may be comfortably in the lead, but his Republican challengers are not sitting idle. Republican state senator Robert Hurt has raised $105,000. Ivy resident Laurence Verga says he's raised $31,000. Albemarle County Supervisor Ken Boyd says he's raised about $19,000. And real estate developer Jim McKelvey has raised about $440,000 thanks to a loan he made to his own campaign.

No word yet on how much money Perriello raised during his event on Sunday. We welcome your comments on this story.

Well maybe he's raising this money from folks who like the work he's doing for the 5th District and want to keep him in Washington. I voted for him before and will happily do it again. Go Tom!

This is the second story on Tom's money in a week. I did not know that the 5th district seat was to go to the highest bidder. How about a story on how he rolls over and sits for Nancy Pelosi?
