Unemployment Rate Drops Slightly In Virginia

August 28, 2007

State unemployment is slightly down according to officials. State employment officials say that the jobless rate dropped last month as students who flooded the market in June looking for summer jobs either found work or stopped looking.

The Virginia Employment Commission says the state unemployment rate fell 3.1% in July, from June's rate of 3.2%. The VEC says last month's 3.1% unemployment rate was the lowest rate for July in seven years, and well below the national jobless rate of 4.9%.

Among individual localities, Arlington County once again posted the lowest unemployment rate at 1.8%. Martinsville remained the locality with the highest rate at 8.7%.
