Congressman Investigated After Scuffle With Airport Employee

September 19, 2007

The House Ethics Committee is investigating a congressman's scuffle with a baggage worker at Dulles Airport last month.

The incident resulted in misdemeanor and battery charges for California Democrat Bob Filner. The committee released a statement saying that it voted to form a four-member investigative subcommittee to look into the
incident.

The panel says that any action will be delayed until criminal proceedings against Filner are resolved. Filner says the August 19th incident was merely a "misunderstanding" after his bags were delayed.

Filner is due in Loudoun County General District Court next month. According to a sworn complaint by a United Airlines baggage worker, Filner stormed into the airline's bagging office, barging past other customers and demanding to speak with higher-ups.
