RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Democrat Terry McAuliffe hauled in $6.2 million for his Virginia gubernatorial bid in September in a show of fundraising prowess that further widened his huge monetary advantage over Republican Ken Cuccinelli, who reported $3.4 million for the month.
That left the former Democratic National Committee chairman and master fundraiser for the presidential bids of Bill and Hillary Clinton with $1.8 million in the bank on Sept. 30 compared with $1 million on hand for Cuccinelli.
According to the Virginia Public Access Project, an independent, nonprofit tracker of Virginia campaign cash, McAuliffe's total raised for 2013 through September was $24.7 million. That's 70 percent ahead of Republican Bob McDonnell's $14.5 million at the same point in his successful 2009 run for governor.
