UPDATE: Construction Zone Wreck Injures Three on Emmet Street

April 16, 2014

Charlottesville police say a medical issue may have led to the crash that sent three people to the hospital Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses to the wreck in front of the Barracks Road Shopping Center said the driver, 74-year-old Conrad Smith of Crozet, was driving erratically southbound on Emmet Street in the moments before the wreck.

A 45-year-old utility worker from Louisa remains in serious condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Investigators say he and a second utility worker, a 23-year-old from Keswick, were standing behind their truck when Smith plowed into them, pinning the worker from Louisa. A third worker, who was in the utility truck bucket, was not injured.

Smith also remains hospitalized Wednesday night. No charges have been filed. Charlottesville police say it will be up to the Commonwealth's Attorney, Dave Chapman, to decide whether to press charges in the incident.

One person was seriously injured, and two others were taken to UVa Medical Center after an accident on Emmet Street in Charlottesville Wednesday afternoon.

The road was closed in front of Barracks Road Shopping Center for about two hours. It has since reopened.

Police say the car plowed through several construction cones blocking one southbound lane a little after 2:30 p.m.

Police tell us the car hit the back of a bucket truck, pinning one worker, who is in serious condition at UVa Medical Center. The crews were making repairs on a utility pole at the time. A second worker and the driver of the car were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Witnesses report that the car was driving erratically before the wreck.
