The first day of Albemarle County's expanded ambulance service is being called a success.
Three new ambulances were added to the Ivy, Earlysville, Seminole Trail area Monday morning. Those ambulances had previously been responding from the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad (C-ARS) on McIntire Road.
At the end of the day, the new ambulances responded to 16 calls for help.
“Things worked great,” said Albemarle County Fire Rescue Chief Dan Eggleston. “Ambulances were able to cover each others calls when they were tied up. That's the way our system is to work. We have a primary and secondary response to ensure we have seamless coverage in the county.”
The changes stem from a dispute over funding. As a result of the changes C-ARS will no longer make ambulance runs to county resident during weekday hours.
