Albemarle Co. Commonwealth's Atty. Responds to Police Checkpoint Issue

July 25, 2013

The Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney is trying to clear up concerns over traffic safety checkpoints.

In a letter to the Board of Supervisors, Denise Lunsford says that if it's performed correctly, the checkpoints don't infringe on individual rights under the 4th Amendment.

The issue was brought to light when an Albemarle County man refused to show his ID to police earlier this month, calling it an act of civil disobedience.

The Supreme Court ruled years ago that checkpoints are part of public safety to make sure people are licensed and aren't driving impaired.
