Albemarle Co. Students Celebrate African-American History

Feb. 20, 2014

Students at Albemarle High School (AHS) honored Black History Month with a tribute to the Harlem Renaissance.

Students gathered at the high school's media center to watch performers pay tribute to influential African-Americans through dance, speeches and poetry.

Several students also got up to give a little history behind people who paved the way for black history like Malcolm X, W.E.B. Du Bois and Angela Ferguson.

"Black History Month is a time to get together, celebrate our race and basically become one as a people," says Makrystea Carter, senior at AHS.

"We have work to do as a community to continue to create black history,” said Wes Bellamy, teacher at AHS. “I am black history, we all are, so let's make our ancestors proud."

"We chose the Harlem Renaissance because it really represents a hub of culture and bringing people together and really celebrating who we are," Assistant Program Specialist Mary Williams said.

One student also played music from several African-American artists who performed during the Harlem Renaissance period.
