Albemarle Co. to Hold Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program

Dec. 24, 2013

The Albemarle County Parks & Recreation Department will host its annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program from December 26th through January 15th.

The program collects discarded Christmas trees, which will be chipped into mulch and then offered to the public at no cost.

According to the City Public Works Department, curbside pick-up for Charlottesville residents will be the week of January 6. Trees must be at the curbside by 7a.m.

By combining forces with the Charlottesville Curb Side Pick-Up Program, the two programs collected over 4,900 trees last year, yielding approximately 236 cubic yards of mulch.

The program is for Christmas trees only. Both the Albemarle Co. and Charlottesville programs require that all decorations, stands and nails be removed from the Christmas trees.

Free mulch will be available to residents starting February 1st, at Darden Towe Park.

Albemarle County will operate seven sites daily, from 7 a.m. until dark:

- Rivanna Solid Waste Authority Recycling Center on McIntire Road (Note: Sunday hours are 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.)
- Chris Greene Lake Park in Earlysville
- Crozet Park in Crozet
- Darden Towe Park on Elks Drive
- Greenwood Community Center in Greenwood
- Scottsville Community Center in Scottsville
- Walnut Creek Park off Old Lynchburg Road
