It takes about four minutes from when you call 911 to tell them about a fire until firefighters start driving to your home.

People in Albemarle County learned of something you can have in your home that can make a life-saving difference.

Albemarle County Fire Rescue set up the demonstration as part of the Citizens' Fire Rescue Academy. Albemarle County Fire Rescue set fire to two model rooms, one with a sprinkler system, the other without.

Smoke detectors increase your chance of surviving a fire by about fifty percent.

Adding a sprinkler system almost guarantees you'll survive the fire, increasing your chance of surviving a fire to almost one-hundred percent.

"A smoke detector, that alerts you to get out. And a sprinkler system, that keeps the fire in check so that when the fire department gets there, it's a much smaller fire," said Albemarle County Fire Marshal Howard Lagomarsino.

"It was just amazing, the difference between the room with the sprinkler versus the room without the sprinkler, and actually looking at the fire damage on the wall," said Aileen Selmeczi.

The cost of a home sprinkler system is about $1.60 per square foot when building a new home.
