Albemarle County School Board Votes on Funding Request

February 14, 2014

It may have been a snow day for students in Albemarle County, but school board members met Friday afternoon to vote on a budget. The entire process took less than twenty minutes.

In a six-to-one vote, the board approved a funding request to ask the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors to provide full funding to the school district. Without making any changes to the funding request presented earlier this month by Superintendent Pam Moran. The funding request includes an operating budget of $164 million and self-sustaining funds of $16 million. This request would require an additional $6.7 million dollars that the school board is hoping county supervisors can help with.

"The level of education that Albemarle County residents demand and expect, we feel this is the budget that's going to get that done," said Ned Galloway, the chair of the school board.

If the county can't come up with the nearly seven million dollars needed to maintain the operating budget, school board members warn cuts will have to be made. Galloway said the board has already considered increasing class sizes, looking at compensation and making cuts to athletic programs.

"We will continue to discuss what possible cuts may be, but in the meantime, we are in a holding pattern until we see what our final revenue picture is," Galloway said after the vote on Friday.

The sole board member to vote against this funding request was Jason Buyaki of the Rivanna District. The funding request will be presented to the board of supervisors on Monday and open to a public hearing during the regular meeting on March 3rd.
