Albemarle County Supervisors Discuss Traffic on 29 North

November 14, 2012

The Albemarle County Supervisors will discuss ways to help control the traffic flow on Route 29 North at Wednesday's meeting as part of the county's long-term road improvement program.

"People get frustrated and have road rage when they get stuck in traffic or when there's an accident or something like that," says Supervisor Ken Boyd. "We want to keep traffic moving as best we can."

One idea for easing congestion is to add synchronized lights to Route 29 from the Charlottesville city limits to Hollymead. The adaptive traffic lights sense when traffic is backing up and adjust themselves automatically in real times to help reduce congestion.

The Virginia Department of Transportation installed a similar system on U.S. Route 250 in the Pantops area about a year ago. Boyd says there has been a considerable reduction in wait times at those traffic lights and he hopes to replicate that success on Route 29.

"The idea is that we would be able to improve the traffic flow, and we're hoping we get the same kind of success we did on Pantops," said Boyd.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. at the Albemarle County Office Building.
