Albemarle County Fire Rescue and Western Albemarle Rescue Squad held a community information session about billing for ambulance rides, officially known as the EMS Cost Recovery Program. The meeting took place at the Crozet library on Monday evening.
The groups explained two changes.
The first change began August 1. The county stopped billing county residents and started only billing their insurance companies for ambulance transport. County residents are not billed for any remaining balances after their insurance payments have been collected. Residents who don't have insurance are not billed. Non-county residents who cannot pay a balance remaining from their insurance may apply for a hardship waiver.
The second change will begin September 1. The Western Albemarle Volunteer Rescue Squad and the Earlysville Volunteer Fire Company will begin participating in the EMS cost recovery program. So, all Albemarle County Ambulance squads will use the cost-recovery program.
Greg Paquin, the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad Vice President, said his squad waited to join the cost recovery program until the county did not bill residents for service.
"We waited three years to get to this point where no Albemarle County resident will receive a bill. It'll be insurance billing only. So, people should not be leary of calling the ambulance because [you] won't get a bill if you live in Albemarle County," said Greg Paquin, the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad Vice President.
One more change has taken place to county fire and rescue squads. The Earlysville company has begun staffing the department on nights and weekends. To fill these shifts, Earlysville would appreciate volunteers. If you would like to volunteer, visit its volunteer information webpage.
The Western Albemarle Squad would also appreciate volunteers. To volunteer, email email@example.com.
