Albemarle Students Get Day Off For Bad Weather

November 26, 2013

Albemarle county students are getting a six day weekend.

Since school was called off today for the weather, that meant an extended break for kids that were already scheduled to be off for Thanksgiving starting tomorrow.

School officials say they understand that many local families have parents that work, so a day where kids are not in school means a day that means scrambling to find alternate plans.

More than 8,000 public school students ride the buses every day.

The county's school buses travel nearly 12,000 miles a day transporting kids to and from school.

County schools officials say those are a lot of lives they feel responsible for traveling back and forth.

So what happened today? The forecast said freezing rain would start around 8am and continue throughout the morning.

But having to make a decision for parents to make plans at 5am, when the freezing rain begins at 8am means predicting the future.

Ultimately, the weather did not cause any reported travel issues.
