Alcohol and speed were factors in an accident that seriously injured two people Saturday night. The accident closed down Interstate 64 westbound in Albemarle County, bringing traffic to a stand still.
State Police charged 41-year-old James Odell Johnson for driving under the influence and reckless driving.
The Fisherville resident was driving a motorcycle with his wife, Christine Johnson, on board. Witnesses say he was driving over 100 miles per hour and cutting in and out of traffic before the accident at mile marker 106, just west of the Crozet exit.
The couple was thrown from the motorcycle before it burst into flames. They remain in serious but stable condition at U.Va. Medical Center.
Police say more charges are pending.
