Outstanding teachers in the area were honored for their work inside the classroom Thursday afternoon. The 2013 Golden Apple Awards Ceremony recognized 44 teachers from Albemarle County and Charlottesville schools.
Parents, colleagues, community members and students nominated the teachers. A selection committee then chose one nominee from each school.
"When they kind of reach out this way, I feel like that's one of those reasons that you go into this job," said Golden Apple Award recipient and Clark Elementary teacher Zoe Padron. "You try to make a difference and it's sort of a message that you really are making a difference in the long run."
Golden Apple Grant Awards were also handed out to select teachers. The money can be used for classroom materials or professional development. 21st Century Learning in the Classroom Grant awards were also presented.
This is the 12th year for the awards ceremony.
The Golden Apple Award program is sponsored by Better Living Building Supply & Better Living Furniture.
