Auction to Sell Several Local Civil War Artifacts

May 16, 2013

Hundreds of items will be auctioned off in Charlottesville on Saturday, May 18, including two Civil War artifacts with local ties.

One is a revolver used by a Mosby Ranger from Scottsville that still has its holster and bullet mold.

Another is a traveling case that was used by Virginia Senator James Murray Mason, famous for almost causing a war between the United States and England.

The auction is being run by Quinn and Farmer Auctions, and they say they could see a significant chuck of change for the items.

"Especially with Civil War things, the price is very unpredictable because these collectors are kind of crazy," said Ken Farmer of Quinn and Farmer Auctions. "They firmly believe whoever dies with the most toy wins the game, so you never know where the price is going to land."

The revolver is estimated at $3,000 to $5,000 while the dispatch case and traveling desk is valued at $10,000 to $15,000.
