An event honored work to get drunk drivers off the road on Thursday night.

The Regional Law Enforcement Awards Dinner recognized officers who had arrested the most drunk drivers in their area.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving, James River Alcohol Safety Action Program (ASAP), and Valley ASAP hosted the annual event. The groups hope high-visibility law enforcement arrests of impaired driving will keep others from driving drunk.

"I have a passion for arresting drunk[ driver]s and getting them off the roadways for the safety of others," said Sean Simmons, a trooper with the Virginia State Police. Simmons won for the Augusta area by issuing 52 DUI's over a year.

"[It's] something that I always strive to do," he said.

This was Simmons' fifth year to win the award.

The Newsplex's Chris Stover hosted the event.
