An Albemarle County man convicted of kicking a baby will spend 30 years behind bars.
Ramon Turley pleaded guilty last year to felony murder in the 2011 death of one-year-old Camora Wicks.
Turley was reportedly babysitting the little girl when she crawled on his leg and he kicked her off. According to medical examiners, that kick broke three of Camora's ribs, lacerated her liver, punctured her pancreas and ultimately killed her.
On Wednesday, before being sentenced, Turley apologized to the family of Camora, saying he is not a monster and did not mean to fatally wound the infant.
"I want the court to know it was truly an accident...if I could walk home today, it still won't make me feel better," Turley told the court.
But Camora's father says no apologies can bring back his daughter.
"She's gone. I never got to hold her. I only got to kiss her twice -- one time in this court room and one time at the funeral home. I never got to be there for her," said Marquise Wicks. "He got what he deserved."
Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Darby Lowe says the sentence was fair.
"No sentence would give them back their child and their baby that they miss and they love," said Lowe. "But the court felt that the sentence -- and I felt that the sentence -- was a sentence that took into account all the evidence, the significant injury to this child, and the evidence for the loss of this family."
Turley was sentenced to 40 years with 10 years suspended. He is not allowed to have contact with the victim's family or any unsupervised contact with any children under the age of 18.
